CONSTRUCTION DEBRIS CUTS THE VELI AKKULAM TIDALLY ACTIVE LAKE IN TO TWO

Background:

The separation of Tidally Active Lake was reduced from 1500 feet to mere 12 feet causing Grave Danger for Aquatic Species since this brackish waters are there Spawning and Breeding Ground. This Lake system comprised with in Trivandrum corporation limits in the Capital of Kerala is the largest wetland Ecosystem within Corporation limits. This place is of exceptional beauty and a Resting Nesting area for Migratory Birds. The Bund Constructed across this Tidally Active Lake to facilitate construction materials was left intact. This we bought to the attention of the Honourable Union Minister for Road Transport Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji and within 4 hours the work started. This was really inspiring for all of us by the " Green Noble Deed " done by the Honourable Union Minister Shri. Nitin Gadkari Ji.

The Action:

Following the mail sent to the Honourable Union Minister Shri. Nitin Gadkari, the National Highway Authority of India has begun removing the barrier across the Veli-Akkulam lake to return the lake system to its former configuration. After Thomas Lawrence,(CEO SWIM) sent a protest to Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari along with the story by Rakesh Nair published in 2017, the decision to remove the bund was made.
